What Are Demodex Mites and Why Do They Matter?

Demodex are parasitic mites that reside in hair follicles and sebaceous glands. While harmless in small numbers, overpopulation can trigger inflammatory responses and interfere with the scalp’s natural function.

Problems Caused by Demodex Overgrowth:

  • Inflammatory Symptoms: Itching, burning, redness, pustules, and a glossy appearance on the scalp.

  • Folliculitis and Blockage: Mite waste and excess oil can clog follicles, forming bumps or pustules.

  • Hair Thinning or Loss: Chronic infestation may damage the follicle structure, causing miniaturisation or atrophy.

  • Seborrheic Dermatitis Flare-ups: May worsen scalp oiliness, dandruff, and itch due to compromised barrier function.

  • Reduced Scalp Immunity: Increased vulnerability to bacterial and fungal infections due to a weakened scalp environment.

How do you know if you have demodex mites on your scalp?

Some common signs of demodex mites on your scalp include persistent itching, a crawling sensation, redness and irritation, dandruff, hair thinning, small bumps or pustules that resemble acne and poor response to scalp treatment.

How do you get rid of demodex mites on your scalp?

Getting rid of scalp mites requires a targeted approach that addresses both the overgrowth and the scalp environment that allows them to thrive. This usually includes a protocol of anti-parasitic agents, medical-grade infrared light, and pH-balancing and anti-inflammatory solutions. It is important to note that demodex overgrowth doesn’t resolve overnight –consistent treatment and proper scalp hygiene are key.

Do demodex mites live in pillows?

While demodex mites themselves do not live independently in your pillow like dust mites do, they can thrive and live off sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria that are already on your pillow. Poor hygiene or infrequent washing of pillowcases can also create an environment that worsens skin irritation or reinfestation. Change pillowcases regularly or use a clean towel over your pillowcase.

Can demodex mites on scalp cause hair loss?

Yes. An overgrowth of Demodex mites can clog and inflame hair follicles, disrupt the scalp barrier, and trigger immune responses—all of which may lead to hair thinning or hair loss over time.

Can I do Demodex Scalp Treatment if I have hair extensions?

Demodex Scalp Treatment is not suitable for individuals with hair extensions, as it may affect the attachment and condition of the extensions.
